Welcome to the Chamber: Abby Hill

We sat down with the Chamber's new Administration and Membership Co-ordinator, Abby Hill, to get to know more about her.

Hey Abby, welcome to the team, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was raised on a lifestyle block in Otorohanga, where I spent most of my life. Growing up in this rural environment gave me a strong sense of community and independence. At 18, I relocated to Hamilton to pursue a hairdressing course, which allowed me to develop my skills and begin my career in a larger city.

When I turned 28, I moved to Auckland while my husband served in the defence force. We lived there for six years, adapting to the city's pace and embracing its opportunities. Eventually, I returned to Otorohanga, where I settled back into familiar surroundings. Now, I’m a parent to three children aged 9 to 23. Each day presents its own challenges and rewards as I navigate the ups and downs of family life while drawing from my varied experiences along the way.

Tell us about your work history.

Over seven years, I worked at the Waitomo Information Centre as a customer service representative, helping tourists with inquiries about accommodations, attractions, and travel information across New Zealand. This role strengthened my interpersonal skills and deepened my knowledge of the tourism industry.

Afterward, I spent eight years as a receptionist and administrator at Otorohanga Medical Centre, managing calls, front desk duties, and ACC-related enquiries.

Recently, I became a personal trainer at Jetts Gym in Te Awamutu, where I help clients achieve their fitness goals through personalised training and coaching.

What does your role at the Chamber entail?

In my role at the Waikato Chamber of Commerce, I focus on managing and coordinating our concierge service and meeting rooms to create a seamless experience for our members and guests. I also provide high-quality membership services, oversee the export certification process, and support the organisation’s general administrative functions. My work is key to ensuring smooth operations, boosting member satisfaction, and contributing to the overall success of the Chamber.

What are your strengths and skills?

I possess strong administrative expertise that allows me to streamline processes and manage projects efficiently, ensuring smooth operations. My passion for connecting with others fosters meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients, enhancing collaboration. I am dedicated to understanding and exceeding client needs, always prioritising a positive experience for all involved. My detail-oriented approach emphasises effective communication and teamwork, contributing to a supportive work environment.

What are you looking forward to bringing to the Chamber?

I’m excited to bring my strong communication skills and confidence to the Chamber. I look forward to building positive relationships with both the staff and our clients, as I believe that strong connections are key to fostering a collaborative environment. I’m eager to learn more about our clients’ needs and how we can best support them. Additionally, I’m committed to contributing wherever I’m needed and helping the team achieve our goals. I believe that by working together, we can create a positive impact in our community.

Where is your favourite place in the Waikato?

One of my favourite places in the Waikato is Hamilton Lake. I absolutely adore the scenic walk that circles the lake, which offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. It's also a fantastic spot for my children, who love playing at the nearby playground. It’s the perfect place for family outings and enjoying nature together!
